Giving the gift ov life

Since the first pregnancy with egg donation in South Africa, performed at Cape Fertility Clinic, Cape Town in 1986, egg donation has become a regular and routine treatment over the past 22 years and the number of people seeking this form of fertility treatment has increased.

STEP 1: Complete the application form

We will request that you complete a Detailed Profile which includes information relating to your family genetics and medical history. You may also ask us any questions, which you may have, as we want you to be totally aware of and committed to the process. This process is conducted by the co-founders of Gift ov life and we respect your privacy and confidentiality whether you enter our Egg Donation program or not.

STEP 3: ENTER THE GIFT OV LIFE DATABASE

Once you have been accepted onto the program and assuming that you are still interested in becoming an egg donor, we will add you to our database of donor angels! Your baby picture/s, an allocated Donor Number and an anonymous description of your physical appearance, health and age will be entered onto our website for potential parents to view.

STEP 4: SELECTION BY RECIPIENTS

Potential recipients, searching for an egg donor, email us for a password. We provide a password for entry to our database of donors (this password is changed regularly for  security reasons.) Should a couple be interested in your online profile, we may send them your detailed profile, providing them with additional information which you have provided us.

We never disclose your name. Once a recipient chooses you, will contact you with an anonymous letter from the recipients requesting that you donate for them. You then decide whether or not you would like to donate. Once both donor and recipient have agreed to work together, Gift ov life will be in regular contact to co-ordinate the process.

STEP 5: THE MEDICAL PROCESS

The medical process starts with an appointment for you with the fertility doctor at one of the fertility clinics. This appointment will include an ultrasound, pelvic examination and blood tests. A donor co-coordinator or psychologist will also be available to you.

Once your blood tests are received and you are deemed to be physically and mentally fit, your menstrual cycle will be coordinated with the recipients. You will also be given a 2-week course of fertility medication with frequent visits to the clinic during these 14 or so days, to check your response to the medication in terms of the development of your eggs.

On the day of egg retrieval the matured eggs will be collected via the vagina via a  “suction” device. You will be under conscious sedation for about 20 minutes and will feel nothing. There is no cutting. You will collect your compensation from the clinic on the day of egg retrieval, after the procedure.

STEP 6: AFTER EGG DONATION

Your donor support person will contact you and/or see you at the clinic. We will also be in contact on the day after the retrieval and a week later.
You will then truly be a donor angel!
